2012: The start of a new eraby Janosh
The year 2012 has always been of special interest to many. Especially the date December 21st 2012, since this will be the day that the Mayan calendar comes to an end. This date is fast approaching and according to the Maya we will leave the world of the fourth sun and enter the world of the fifth sun. To many this ending of the Mayan calendar evokes a lot of questions as to what might happen in 2012. According to Mayan prophecies this date will mark a time for change, harmony and re-birth.
The Mayan Calendric SystemTo fully understand the Mayan predictions about the year 2012, it is of great importance to understand their calendric system. The Maya kept time with a combination of several cycles that combined mark the movement of the sun, moon and Venus. The Mayan calendar is a system of different calendars and mathematical systems which could be synchronized in order to create more extensive time cycles. The most important calendar is the one with a period of 260 days, also known as the Tzolkin calendar. This calendar combined with another 365-day calendar known as the Haab forms a synchronized cycle lasting for 52 Haabs, called the Calendar Round. Both calendars consist of smaller cycles of 13 and 20 days. To track longer periods of time the Maya used the Long Count, which is based on the number of elapsed days since a mythical starting point and was commonly used for referring to any date in the future. Many Long Count dates are supported by what is called Lunar Series, another calendar that uses the lunar phases. The Long Count makes use of 20 series. The name for a day was Kin, 20 of these Kins are known as Winal; 18 Winals make one Tun; 20 Tuns make on Katun; 20 Katuns make one Baktun. Long Count dates start with the highest period order first (Baktun), followed by the smaller periods until the number of days (Kin) are listed after which the Calendar Round is given. The European calendar mandated by Pope Gregory in 1583 is the only world calendar that did not intercalate at least two celestial cycles. The Tibetan calendar is so similar to the Mayan that traditional scholars now speculate that they share a common origin. An ancient Hindu astrology used 27 houses of 13 degrees 20 minutes, which are key numbers in the Mayan calendar. The year 2012The date 21-12-2012 in the Mayan calendar is of great significance. There will be a Baktun ending in 2012, being the end of a 13th 400 year period. Maya-expert John Major Jenkins has researched the Maya calendar extensively and states that the Maya intended their 2012 end date to target the alignment of the solstice sun and the Milky Way galaxy. Ultimately, the Maya envisioned this alignment to occur in 2012 as a union of the Cosmic Mother (the Milky Way) with First Father

(the December solstice sun). On this specific date a new large period of 26.000 years and a smaller period of 5200 years will start. Once every 26.000 years - this time in 2012 - the soul of the universe, the core of the Milky Way, will be in one line with the sun, the centre of our solar system, and with our planet Earth. So the centre of our small part of the universe (microcosm) then is in direct connection with what the Maya called the cosmic womb (macrocosm). This end of the 13th Baktun does not however mark the end of the world but rings in a new beginning or time of re-birth. According to several old Mayan scriptings we are currently living in the fourth world. The Maya believed that the fourth world would end in chaos after which the fifth and final world would be created.
Period of transitionMany have questions as to what the transition from the fourth world into this fifth world will mean. Guatemalan researcher, historian and anthropologist Carlos Barrios, who spend 25 years studying the Mayan calendar system, speaks of the period leading up to 2012: “We are no longer in the World of the Fourth Sun, but we are not yet in the World of the Fifth Sun. This is the time in-between, the time of transition. As we pass through transition there is a colossal, global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war and ongoing Earth changes. All this was foreseen via the simple, spiral mathematics of the Mayan calendars. Everything will change.” Barrios states that December 21st 2012 is to the Maya the start of a new era resulting from and signified by the solar meridian crossing the galactic equator, and the earth aligning itself with the centre of the galaxy.
Return of consciousnessAccording to Guatamalese ‘Mayan Elders of the Eagle Clan’ this fifth cycle will be one of wisdom, harmony, peace, love, of consciousness and the return of natural order. According to them it is most definitely not the end of the world, as some may fear. As they say: “The first cycle was a feminine energy and its element was fire. The second cycle was of masculine energy, and its element was earth. The third cycle was a feminine energy and its element was air. The fourth cycle is a masculine energy and its element is water. The fifth cycle will be a fusion of both feminine and masculine energies. It will be a transition where there won’t be any more confrontations between the polarities. It will bring balance and there won’t be hierarchy of one over the other. Both energies will support each other. It is why this period is called one of harmony, the kingdom of love and the return of consciousness. Its element will be the ether.” Based upon the Mayan knowledge of the universe – a knowledge that is still stored inside our subconscious minds yet forgotten and no longer used by us Westerners today – we should not fear what is about to happen in six years time. Instead, we should trust their ancient wisdom and look forward to this transition into a new world, a new dimension.
