Feng Shui and self actualizationby Marlyna Los
The words Feng Shui are literally translated into Wind and Water. It is the Eastern study of the relationship of humans to time and their environment. In the East it is recognized that we are not separate from the whole. Feng Shui is an environmental science that teaches how everything is interconnected and yet constantly changing. By learning how to work these energies or laws of nature we can learn how to apply the right action at the right time to get the right effect - self actualization. Feng Shui is about energy, the life force or Chi - visible or invisible, tangible or intangible. When Chi comes from Heaven it can come with the effect of a full moon, or a hot day, or a season, invisible to the eye but tangible in effect. When Chi comes from earth or material goods it can be hard, soft, bright or dark, square or round and much more, also all tangible in effect. The study of Chi takes us into Yin and Yang, the five elements and Time. Classical or Traditional Feng Shui encompasses all of this and more. While Eastern philosophy teaches us we are not separate from the whole, Western thinking is about individualism. By learning how to understand and work with the forces of nature perhaps both can be realized. Feng shui is not a one size fits all solution. We are all unique energetic magnetic beings, attracting energy to ourselves all the time. This is important to note, by understanding your own energetic imprint, and understanding how time and the five elements interact, you can respond with “right action at the right time.” Are you a wood person? Are you a fire person? What environment is best for you? The Chinese believe that when we are born and with our first breath we are imprinted with our own energy system. Four Pillars is an advanced Feng Shui method of understanding your own energy system. Most people know what year they are born in; if you are born this year you are born in the year of the fire pig. The pig corresponds to the wood element. What does this all mean? There are 12 animals and each animal correspond to different elements and yin and yang. The day determines your own unique element. By understanding your four pillars, you have insight on how to use the five elements to benefit yourself. Luck is not random; it knows when the right time to act is and what action to take.
Spirituality and the search for that which is unseen and intangible is part of what Feng Shui is all about, a way to bring spirit (heaven chi) into your home to grace you and balance it with earth chi. By creating homes that optimize the best environment and reflect your ideals and goals you become congruent.
